Dar es Salaam Skatepark

Why We need a skatepark in Dar es Salaam?

According to the World Population Review, Dar es Salaam is the third fastest-growing city in Africa and the ninth fastest-growing globally, with an annual population growth rate of 5.15%. Such drastic growth brings along different challenges to the natural and urban environment. One of them is the gradual disappearance of open public spaces that planners often do not prioritise.

Finding a place to skate in Dar es Salaam has  always been a challenge. This is why we are advocating for the construction of Dar es Salaam Skatepark.

Dar es Salaam Skatepark is the proposed public free extreme sports facility in Dar es salaam City, Tanzania. The facility is designed to provide a safe, legal and structured site to over 100 people per week, aged 5 (all minors, less than 18 years will have parents to sign consent forms) and over who participate in Skateboarding, BMX and Rollerskating . The facility is also designed to support Youths’ development projects and arts. This will be the first skatepark in Dar es Salaam and biggest skateboarding complex in the country. The complex, designed by local Tanzanians, will feature a competition street course, a bowl and flow course with a sitting park and amenities.

The Dar es Salaam Skatepark will offer support to the many underprivileged and vulnerable children who will benefit greatly from having a positive and safe place to learn and build their community. The skatepark shall run other activities to engage children and youths.

The skatepark uses Skateboarding to foster a range of art and development projects, such photography, filmmaking, design, manufucturing projects and skateboarding lessons.

Throughout the year, Dar es Salaam Skatepark shall facilitate volunteers and host a series of National and International sports events that attract some of the World’s greatest athletes. We believe that this innovative and alternative project will complement existing skateparks within the country and advocate for public spaces developments in Dar Es Salaam City in the future.

Don Bosco DIY skatepark

In Dar es Salam we have been holding regular skate session at Don Bosco Youth Center in Upanga. We started skating at Don Bosco in 2017. Back then it was just a couple of friends and a few skateboards that we had at the time. After acquiring the permission to use their basketball facilities for skateboarding sessions, it became our daily session spot where we gathered every evening to skate.

We share this space with basketball players who use it from time to time.

The Don Bosco Skateboarding sessions which attract kids of all ages and gender, mostly coming from the neighborhoods of Upanga and nearby schools. Volunteers and members of Tanzania Skateboarding Organization help to teach newcomers skateboarding basics and generally manages the facilities and programs.

Don Bosco Youth Center has always been a safe space for us.
