OFF-TO Dar

In Tanzania, the sport is growing fast. There are at least 200 skateboarders nationwide in places like Arusha, at the recently constructed skatepark by Wonders Around the World called Smallsteps Skatepark, in Dodoma at the first skatepark in Tanzania built by Skate-Aid in 2011 called Dodoma Skatepark. Skateboarding was practiced in Tanzania as early as 1998 introduced by pioneers, like the legendary Tanzanian skateboarder Baraka Bishota, who pushed the culture forward for many years and inspired a generation of skateboarders including myself.

In 2021, we decided to form an organization which will unify all skateboarding through the country from Dodoma to Arusha and Dar es Salaam and hopefully expand elsewhere in the country. The collective is called Tanzania Skateboarding Organization founded by Tanzanian Skateboarders who have been in the scene for many years.

Tanzania Skateboarding Organization is a community based organization, making skateboarding accessible in Tanzania. Our core aim of the organization is to improve skateboarding throughout the country by providing skateboarding tools and equipment, building skateparks, facilitating training workshops nationally and facilitating national and international competitions.

After observing an influx of new users over the past few years, we saw the necessity of building better skateboarding equipment and tools such as skateboards, safety pads and helmets and also our recently completed half pipe at Don Bosco.

All of these achievements would have not been possible without the help of our sponsors, supporters and friends who donated the equipment, members of the Tanzania Skateboarding Organization who have dedicated their time to mentor young skaters and the Don Bosco Youth Center organization for providing us the space to skate.

I've been skating in Tanzania for over 10 years now since I was 16 years old, mostly in Dar es Salaam. At a Slipway helipad, University of Dar es Salaam sports courts, at Gymkhana basketball grounds, Morocco Bus Stand and even in the streets of Dar on Sundays when it is quiet. These are the places we met on Saturdays for a collective session. The collective, now dismembered, was called the Tanzania Skate Society. -Hassan Kisamo
